At CAS Trips, student safety is the foundation of every journey we design. We understand that behind each of our student travelers is a network of parents, educators, and communities who have placed their trust in us. That trust is not something we take lightly.
Our trips are immersive, transformative experiences that help young people engage with global issues, step out of their comfort zones, and connect meaningfully with local communities. To make that possible, we build safety into every layer of our programs — from accommodations and activities to staff training and real-time support. Our goal is simple: to ensure every participant feels secure, supported, and free to focus on learning, service, and personal growth.

A Safety-First Approach to Trip Design
Safety begins at the planning stage. Every CAS Trip — whether it’s a multi-country European adventure or a domestic weekend away — is crafted with a detailed risk management strategy in mind.
We start with comprehensive risk assessments tailored to each destination and activity. These go far beyond basic travel advisories. We evaluate potential risks based on health infrastructure, local transport conditions, environmental concerns, and cultural factors. We identify contingency plans, establish medical protocols, and verify emergency response capabilities for every location we visit.
Our safety framework is not static — it evolves with global trends and student needs. For example, in recent years, we’ve adapted our approach to incorporate up-to-date health and hygiene protocols, enhanced digital communication methods, and mental health considerations. Whether students are trekking through the Andes on our Peru Adventure or participating in a sustainability workshop in Copenhagen, our process ensures that every moment is backed by a system of care.
Accommodations: Thoughtfully Chosen, Thoroughly Vetted
Where students stay plays a major role in how safe and supported they feel. That’s why we vet all accommodation providers before including them in our programs.
Our accommodations are selected based on strict criteria, including proximity to emergency services, cleanliness, staffing, and cultural sensitivity. We favor smaller, locally-owned establishments whenever possible, to both enhance community engagement and ensure a personal, attentive service standard.

We also collaborate with accommodation providers, particularly in rural areas and during Community-Led Service (CLS) trips, to help them grow in their capacity to host student travelers safely and ethically. This includes offering:
- Child safety guidance and resources, aligned with our partnership with The Code.
- Access to our Best Practices suggestions, designed to help small providers understand student needs and expectations.
- Opportunities to engage with Travelife sustainability training, supporting the development of more ethical and environmentally friendly hospitality practices.
This approach not only strengthens local communities and small businesses — it also reinforces our commitment to ethical travel. By investing in our accommodation partners, we help create safer, more meaningful experiences for students while building capacity and awareness within the travel industry itself.
Activities That Inspire — and Are Always Supervised
We are known for our hands-on, eye-opening activities: maintaining nature trails in Finland, refugee engagement in Athens, sustainable farming in Thailand, and much more. Each of these experiences is developed with not only impact and education in mind but also safety.
All activities are professionally guided and age-appropriate, with clear objectives, rules, and support structures. Whether students are learning to cook traditional Vietnamese dishes or taking part in a beach clean-up in Portugal, they are always supervised by experienced guides who know the local environment and can respond quickly to any need.
We apply the same diligence to physical and outdoor activities. Prior to anything like hiking, biking, surfing, or kayaking, we assess student readiness, provide full safety briefings, and ensure all equipment meets local and international standards.
Trip Leaders Who Lead With Care
Our Trip Leaders are the heart of CAS Trips — mentors, facilitators, and caregivers all rolled into one. Each leader is trained not only in logistics and educational delivery, but also in first aid, emergency response, youth development, and child safeguarding.
All CAS Trips staff and local partners undergo background checks and comprehensive onboarding. We also equip them with communication tools, medical kits, and location-specific resources so they can respond quickly and calmly in the event of any challenge.
More importantly, our leaders create a culture of care on every trip. From encouraging open dialogue to modeling inclusive behavior, they help build a space where students feel safe to share, explore, and take ownership of their experiences. Many of our Trip Leaders are former international students, educators, or long-time guides — they understand what young travelers need to thrive.

A Culture of Mutual Responsibility
Safety is something we empower students to take part in. One of the most powerful tools we use to support this is the buddy system, which encourages students to move through destinations in pairs or small groups, looking out for one another and developing awareness and responsibility.
We also hold daily briefings and check-ins, ensuring that students know what to expect, where they’ll be, and who to contact in any situation. These moments of connection help build routines that make students feel confident and supported.
The CAS Trips environment encourages open communication — students are invited to ask questions, voice concerns, and contribute to solutions. Our commitment to student agency extends to safety, too: we treat students as partners in the process, helping them develop lifelong skills in risk assessment, personal responsibility, and ethical travel.
24/7 Support and Transparent Communication
From the moment a school books a CAS Trip to the day the last student returns home, we are committed to ongoing support.
Our operations team monitors trips in real-time and can be reached 24/7 for any logistical or emergency support. We maintain direct lines of communication with schools, offering updates, sharing important information, and providing peace of mind throughout the trip.
We also offer a robust digital support infrastructure — our website and mobile application provide access to safety policies, emergency contacts, health forms, and more, so that everyone involved in a trip is informed and prepared.

Partnering With The Code: A Stand Against Exploitation
As part of our commitment to responsible and ethical travel, CAS Trips is proud to partner with The Code, a global initiative to end the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism.
By signing The Code, we have pledged to integrate child protection into every level of our operations — from training staff to monitoring suppliers and raising awareness among students. We source vendors and local partners who understand and adhere to child-safe policies. We also educate students about ethical engagement and the power of informed, respectful travel.
This partnership reinforces what we believe deeply: that transformative travel should never come at the expense of safety or dignity. Our students don’t just learn about global issues — they practice global responsibility.
Safety Supports Learning
Ultimately, everything we do to promote safety is in service of our greater mission: to provide students with meaningful, transformative experiences that inspire global citizenship and personal growth.
When students feel safe, they can fully engage. They can ask big questions, have difficult conversations, try new things, and reflect on who they are and what they stand for. That’s the heart of what CAS Trips offers — and safety is what makes it all possible. We invite educators, parents, and school communities to explore our safety policies in full at castrips.org/safety and reach out with any questions. We are always ready to listen, adapt, and strengthen the systems that keep our travelers protected.
