Farming for the Future in Peru
Indigenous Peruvians living in isolated and harsh terrain have a very strong and proud connection to their land and traditions. Farming plays a huge role in the region, yet it is often carried out in ineffective ways.
During this CLS South America Trip, students will be collaborating with Andean locals, who are struggling with ongoing poverty, malnourishment, low school attendance rates and the current climate crisis. Together you will discover new ways of farming for the future of the region.
Get ready for an exciting week-long outdoor adventure, bringing together local communities through sustainable farming. You will truly be making a positive impact by developing the farming infrastructure needed to stimulate economic growth in the Sacred Valley of Peru.
The Project
Greenhouse Farming
Students will be serving high-altitude, indigenous Anrean rural communities located around Calca. Here local governments and NGOs have focused on culturally inappropriate or ineffective methods of farming to date. This community-led project aims to improve access to food and increase the levels of income in the area.
The project will provide locals with an experimental space for communal learning, blending traditional agricultural practices with modern greenhouse farming innovations. Students will work on a farm that provides appropriate training methods embedded in the realities of rural communities. The entire project is carried out in an environmentally and ecologically responsible way.
